Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)

The Light Adjustable Lens Implant is a monofocal lens implant that can be adjusted after it’s already inside your eye.
This adjustability allows it to be more accurate in achieving glasses-free vision for many patients.
Until now, surgeons have relied upon the accuracy of pre-surgery measurements to determine a patient’s post
operative needs. But RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens® is changing how the U.S.’ most common surgery — cataract
surgery — is performed. With the LAL, surgeons simply implant the lens and adjust it, using a targeted ultraviolet light,
after surgery.

Traditionally, cataract patients would undergo extensive pre-operative testing to determine the prescription (or
power) their new implantable lens should be set at. However, pre-op testing cannot fully anticipate small shifts
occurring during the healing process. Being able to adjust the lens’ power after healing is complete gives surgeons
and patients the opportunity for clearer, more precise vision. The LAL removes the guesswork from cataract surgery.
There are some patients who are particularly difficult to hit the bullseye with traditional, non-adjustable lens implants.
These patients include those with extremely long or short eyes, irregular corneal astigmatism, a history of laser vision
correction or radial keratotomy, or corneal ectasia.

In these patients and others, the light adjustable lens is an excellent option to achieve glasses-free vision.
The light adjustable lens does come with some extra work after the surgery, mostly in the form of responsibilities
for the patient after surgery. Patients are required to have multiple additional visits with dilation of the eyes for the
adjustment of the lens implant. During this adjustment period, which is typically 4-6 weeks after surgery, protective uv
protective glasses must be worn so that light from the environment does not adjust the lens in an uncontrolled way.
